Although the school holidays halved the number of games played in the Williamsons Butchers ‘A’ League this week, the ‘B’ league managed to complete all their fixtures. Four weeks in and only games difference separates the Murray Arms, Nomads, Muppets and Tankerness at the top of the ‘B’ league, albeit with Nomads and Tankerness having played a game less than the other two thus far.
The Nomads just barely edged Murray Arms 7-5 in their encounter while there was an even closer battle between Sands and the Bilco Boys, which resulted in a share of the points. Robbie Norquoy scored a hat-trick of maximums for Tankerness in their 8-4 win over Sanday ‘B’, a scoreline replicated by the Vikings over the Young Loons. The first whitewash of the season was recorded in the rugby club where the Muppets used their extra experience to overpower the young Ale Stars team, although three of the first four games went the distance.
A close match was anticipated between last years top two in the ‘A’ league, but this time out the Legion beat their hosts the Commodores by a reasonably comfortable 9-3 margin. The game was obviously not short of quality though with the Commodores posting four 180s between them, although that was matched solely by Kevin Gray, who also checked out on 100. The Untouchables are sitting second in the league at present and look ready to mount a title challenge this year as Brett Dickinson posted yet another brace of 180s to help Untouchables beat the Legion Arrows 8-4. The Arrows remain rooted to bottom spot just now, but Graham Firth’s performance on the night sent a loud and clear message to the rest of the league that they certainly won’t go down without trying hard to stay in the top flight. Meanwhile over on the other Legion boards the Wanderers only just got the better of the Warriors in a great game of darts, with seven different players all posting big stuff on the back of the card, highlight of which was Stuart Thomson’s obligatory 180s in the midst of a flurry of twenty-something scores! The Wanderers currently sit third behind the Untouchables on games difference, in what has been their best start to a season for several years. The Warriors are perhaps suffering somewhat from Second Season Syndrome after a great first season in the top flight, but with all their defeats being marginal so far, it shouldn’t be long before they find themselves picking up points.
180s this week were hit by: Robbie Stanger, Leigh Shearer, Wayne Monkman, Graham Firth, Brian Moar, Eddie Drever, George Coltherd, Patrick Sinclair, Gary Wilson, Andrew Moar, Grant Harrold, Brian Stevenson, Billy Ward (two), Stuart Thomson (two), Brett Dickinson (two), Erlend Lennie (two), Robbie Norquoy (three) and Kevin Gray (four).
Ton-plus checkouts came from: Kevin Gray 100, John Hamilton 100, Simon Parry 100, Martin Peace 100, Ryan Wilkie 114 and Graham Firth 110 & 101.
