Week two of the Williamsons Butchers A league saw yet more close games and even the first big upset.
The Commodores are looking like they mean business as they sit top of the shop following their second successive 11-1 win, this time over Quoyburray B. Small Consolation perhaps for the tankerness side but their solitary point came from an impressive win for Graham Reid over Commodores skipper Robbie Stanger, not an easy feat by any means. The Untouchables sealed a close 7-5 win over Untouchables A to sit joint second, along with the Legion who defeated the Arrows 10-2 in a mid week game. Once more the back of their card was pretty full, with all four Legion players making a mark or two. The Orkney Golf Club team played host to the Warriors, a tie that last year almost provided a shock result. This time however, the hosts were in a less generous mood and sealed an 8-4 victory, with Stevie Linklater once more posting notable scores and finishes. A poor weather forecast saw the match between Quoyburray and Shapinsay postponed to a later date. The first real shock scoreline of the season was posted by the Wanderers who had a surprising 8-4 victory over Sanday, with Wanderers Skipper Jimic Flett leading by example, winning all four points he was involved in. The Wanderers currently occupy fourth position in the league, but that could soon change with a string of tough fixtures in the coming weeks. Next weeks fixtures throw up some meaty tussles, with the pick of the bunch being the Commodores v Legion in what could be a telling result for who may top the table by Christmas. Likewise the result of Quoyburray B v Shapinsay may play a part in who occupies the positions at the tail end of the league. Wanderers v Warriors always has a bit of edge to it and there will undoubtedly be a tough game between the Golf Club and Untoucables A.
Into the B league and the Murray Arms are in pole position following an 11-1 turnover of neighbours the Sands, with both Jamie Drever and Keith Bain in fine form. Although level at half-time, the Muppets ran out 8-4 victors over Sanday B to sit second. A fine start to the season for them, and all the more impressive given key player Mark Shearer has yet to play a league game. Streamline bounced back from defeat last week to beat the new side from the rugby club, the Ale Stars, 8-4. Although a defeat, the youngsters should take plenty encouragement considering the vast gulf in experience between the sides. Following a bye week in round one, the Nomads kicked off their campaign with a solid 10-2 win over the Young Loons. The recent A league experience of new signing Erlend Lennie, combined with the potential of exciting young prospect Ryan Wilkie, could perhaps see the Nomads push harder for promotion this year. They host the Murray Arms next week in what should be a very close match.
