Three cups in a week

It was back to the nitty gritty after the Carling Kirkwall Open with a week of 301 double start competitions, starting with the Knight Cup for the ‘A’ boys.
Seven teams entered, with the Legion going for the complete whitewash of cups, and they showed they were in no mood to do anyone favours, white washing Sanday 4-0.
In the top half, the Commodores and Untouchables were locked in a titanic struggle, with the game going to the play-off which the Holm boys won, before meeting the Wanderers in the semi-final, and winning 4-0.

So, would it be the Legion or Golf Club they met in the final? The Golf Club boys played well, but couldn’t hold the Legion, going down 4-2.

So, it looked like a rare old battle for the cup, but it only looked it, as the Legion changed gear and raced to a 4-0 victory. So it’s the lot for the Legion – every domestic cup.
The following night, the ‘B’ boys got their chance, with the Seatter Cup and nine teams entered, with RBLM going for their third cup.

And it didn’t take them long to make the final, taking out Tankerness and the Murray Arms. The Shore, winners last year, also made it to the final but had no answer to the Legion boys, losing out 4-1.
The last event of the week was the once very popular Tom Notman Memorial Cup. Only 16 players entered and, as it is open to any player who had played for the K-DDL, it was disappointing that only one “old boy” took up the challenge.

This was Arthur Barnett, the 1977 singles champion the year that the entry was 224 players – the most ever entered in an Orkney event.
Arthur didn’t last long, and by final time it was two very familiar faces toeing the oche – Kirkwall open champion Kevin Gray and Martin Peace.
Kevin came out 2-1 the winner.

In a 301 double start, a good start is needed and Kevin started four times with a 148.
Also there were not many 180s scored, but Leigh Shearer managed one. Robbie Stanger nearly did scoring 177.
High checkouts: 100 from Mike Bain; 129 Sean Stanger; and 134 Bruce Moar.
The next cup is the Steven Flett Mixed Doubles, on March 30.
