Legion go clear at top

There was not a great turnout for the Tom Notman Memorial Cup, with only 20
players entering and take away the five non-registered players, that left
only 15 players from over 100 registered with the K-DDL. Maybe the double
start format put them off, but it didn’t detract from the standard of darts
thrown and with the double start, there were some early surprise results,
but by final time, it was two familiar faces on show, with Robbie Stanger up
against Derek Firth. Robbie was red hot, winning 2-0 to add the Tom Notman
Cup to his Kirkwall Open one from the previous week.

It is over -or is it? The Legion took a massive step towards retaining
their Williamson’s A League title with a narrow 7-5 defeat of the
Untouchables. They came from 4-2 down in the first half to win the second
half 5-1, so they now lead the Untouchables by six points, but have a vastly
superior games difference and there are only three games to go, so one more
win for the Legion will give them the crown. The Wanderers, who beat
Quoyburray 10-2 are the only other team who can still take second spot, but
it would be a miracle, as the Untouchables would have to lose all three
games. The Golf Club had a very good 7-5 win over the Commodore and there
were points for both Wanderers B and Quoyburray B as they drew 6-all and
also good points for Meadowbank as they beat Untouchables A 7-5.

The Williamson’s B League is a little closer, but Sanday are in the
driving seat and had a very good 9-3 win over the Murray Arms, but the
Fanooks are still there, two points behind, after beating Tankerness 10-2
but they have played a game more. The Shore 2 are still up there, with a
defeat of Deerness. But a defeat for the Shore, going down 8-4 to the Likely
Lads and a first win for Sands 2 8-4 over the Bilco Boys, but they look as
if they are headed for the Wooden Spoon.

There were 180’s from Alan Brown Ian Findlay, Bruce Moar, Wayne Monkman,
Derek Ward snr, Fraser Laird, Robbie Stanger, Stevie Linklater and two from
Derek Firth and three from Kevin Gray. That takes the 180’s scored this
season to over 300.

There were high finishes of 108 from Colin Barnett, 111 from Gordon Rendall,
114 and 115 from Derek Firth, 127 from Ian Wilkie in a three-darter and
Bruce Moar had a 158.

It is the annual East v West on Friday, in the Stromness Golf Club. A
bus will leave the Kirkwall Royal British Legion Club at 7pm. All the
reserves are requested to travel.

Tickets for the darts Do on April 23 are still on sale from the secretary.
Trophies won this season will be presented on the night.
