Walking Group 1 - 16 January, 2026 - Birsay north coast

by Tim Wright - 18:22 on 27 January 2026

Eleven of us turned up today at the car park for the Brough of Birsay .The forecast was good and the wind was light .The Sun shone all the way but instead of dealing with muddy slippery paths we had to contend with frosty slippery paths instead .There had been a heavy frost overnight which hadn't been forecast .Nothing daunted we set off along the cliff to where the Whale Bone Cross used to be . There was a heavy swell in Birsay Bay and along the Northside cliffs .The bit of wind was against the waves lead to spectacular Mares Tails, much of the delight of the photographers among us .Then it was up to the Geo with a stop to admire the waterfall half way along .We then turned for home along the road by the houses and opted to go along the cliff by Skipi Geo to the cars rather than along the road to the Palace . A nice 3 mile winter walk in excellent weather finished off with a picnic and pie at the Birsay shop for some of us . It's not often that one can sit out for a picnic in mid January !

The next walk will be Friday 20th February . Details nearer the time .

Keep moving ,

Tim
