U3A Music Appreciation Group - May 2019

The Music Appreciation Group met at Valerie’s house on Monday, May 6th, to explore the theme of ‘The Male Voice’. This was an interesting and enjoyable morning, the voices ranging from exponents of Gregorian chant to Flanders and Swann. The music listened to was as follows:
Three pieces sung by Andrea Bocelli: Schubert’s “Ave Maria”; Offenbach’s “Barcarolle”; and – with Bryn Tyrfil – Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers’ Duet”;
Three pieces sung by Paul Robeson: “Ol’ Man River”; “Deep River”; and “Shenandoah”;
Robert Robinson (lead vocal with the group Skippinish) sang “Dream Memory”;
George Gershwin’s “Funny Face”, sung by Fred Astaire; and “They All Laughed”, sung by Bing Crosby;
John Carol Case sang “Libera Me”, from Fauré’s “Requiem”;
Alexander Armstrong sang “On Days Like These”;
James Watson sang the “Gloria”, based on chants by John Marbecke, from David Liddle’s “English Organ Mass”;
Flanders and Swann sang “Misalliance”;
Nat King Cole sang “Rambling Rose”;
Mario Lanza sang “With a Song in my Heart” by Rodgers and Hart;
Carlo Bergonzi sang Puccini’s “Che gelida manina” from “La Boheme”;
Angus Findlater sang “Lonely Scapa Flow”;
The St Dominic Priory Choir sang the Gregorian chant “Salve Regina”;
Sting (Gordon Sumner) – with The Chieftains – sang “Mo Ghile Mear” (“Our Hero”);
The choir from Truro Cathedral sang William Byrd’s “Nunc Dimitis” from his “Short Service”.
The next meeting will be held at Louise’s house on Monday, 3rd June, and Jean’s choice of theme is “Birds”.
