U3A Music Appreciation Group - April 2019

Through force of circumstances, it was only a small number of the Music Appreciation Group which met at Glenys’s house for their meeting on Monday, 1st April. Glenys had chosen the theme “Music for the Flute”, and a wonderfully eclectic mix resulted:
Two pieces from “The Tree”, the second CD of the chamber music trio Classic Rhythm (Helen O’Connell – flute; Adrian Sutcliffe – piano; Chris Brannick – percussion): Adrian Sutcliffe’s “Paganini Variations”, and Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek”;
Haydn’s “Flute Trio No 31 in G” – the second movement;
The Irish folk tune “She Moved Through the Fair”, played by James Galway (with the Chieftains);
J S Bach’s “Bouree Anglais”;
Two selections from Gemma McGregor’s CD “From Nothing”, played by the composer – “From Nothing” and “Tantrums”;
C P E Bach’s “Trio for Flute, Violin and Continuo in A” – the first movement – played by Katy Bircher and Rachel Podger;
The “Andantino” from Mozart’s “Flute and Harp Concerto in C”;
Mozart’s “Andante for Flute and Orchestra in C major”;
Ravel’s “Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet”;
“Pan Flute Favourites” – “Forse” and “The Lonely Shepherd”;
Three movements of an anonymous “Motet”, from Florilegium’s CD “Bolivian Baroque”;
The “Presto” from Benda’s “Flute Concerto in E minor”, played by Mikael Helasvuo with the Helsinki Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Jukka-Pekka Saraste.
And finally – James Galway playing Villa Lobos’s “Bachianas Brasileiras No 5”.
The next meeting will be held at Valerie’s house on Monday, 6th May – the theme will be advised in due course.
