U3A Music Appreciation Group - March 2019

As usual, the Music Appreciation Group met on the 1st Monday of the month (March 4th), and the venue was Louise’s house in Stromness. Following on from last month’s theme (“Piano Concerti”), the chosen subject this month was “Any Concerto”, and resulted in a morning of delightful music.
Movements were played from the following:
Bach’s “Organ Concerto in G”;
Karl Jenkins’ “Palladio” (the so-called “Diamond Music”);
Villa Lobos’s “Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra”, played by Sean Shibe;
The first movement of Glazunov’s “Violin Concerto in A minor”, played by Jascha Heifetz and the London Philharmonic Orchestra;
Hummel’s “Trumpet Concerto in E minor”, played by Alison Balsom and the BBC Scottish Orchestra;
Vivaldi’s “Concerto in A minor for Two Violins”;
John Stanley’s “Concerto for Organ and Strings, No 6 in B flat major, Op 2”;
Mozart’s “Bassoon Concerto in B flat”, played by Ursula Le Voe;
Handel’s “Organ Concerto” (“Cuckoo and the Nightingale”);
Bach’s “Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor”, played by Yuja Wang and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra;
Malcolm Arnold’s “Concerto for Guitar and Chamber Orchestra”, played by Sean Shibe and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales;
Max Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy, Op 46;
The “Intermezzo” from Bartok’s “Concerto for Orchestra”, played by The World Orchestra for Peace;
Alessandro Marcello’s “Oboe Concerto in D minor”, played by Richard Edlinger and the Capella Istropolitana;
Telemann’s “Violin Concerto in G major”;
AND
Gloria struck an amusing – and different - note by playing the first movement of Mozart’s “Magic Flute”, sung in this instance by Florence Foster Jenkins (!)
April’s meeting, on Monday the 1st, will take place at Glenys’s house, and she has chosen as her theme “Music for the Flute”.
