Music Appreciation

by Angela - 22:56 on 09 January 2018

The U3A music group last met on Monday the 8th in Orphir-and our theme this time was "The Organ"-

We take it in turn to chose a theme-this was Babs choice-

An inspired one as some of us  had limited knowledge of this subject-

Luckily we have two very knowledgable members of the group-who could play and were enthusiastic in sharing their knowledge-

We learned much about the history, construction and technique of the instrument-as well as the venues-

Bach was well represented ,but we also heard pieces by Handel,Guillaume de Machout,Jan Pieterszoon Sweelink,Saint-Saens,Elgar and Tchaikovsky.

The organs we listened to included the Kelvingrave, built for the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901,Dunblane Cathedral,Winchester Cathedral,Paisley Abbey,Merton College Oxford and A cinema Wurlitzer in Kingston on Thames.

Sizes differ-from one that could fit into a large van to the worlds biggest organ in Philadelphia-with 28750 pipes in 464 ranks-

We meet on the first Monday of the month-at 10-30 a.m.-

We do need additional members-
