Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.
Keep moving.
PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

Six of us met at Westbank after a late change due to a poor weather forecast. As to be expected, with moments to go the weather cleared and one member who missed the late call off email and phone had an interesting afternoon taking photos of Rendal and the Doo Cot. The rest of us had a viewing of the excellent CD of photos put together by Sally for the Edinburgh Visit plus pictures of the actual visit activities and a birds eye view of lots of the sites visited from Tim. Tea and cakes were taken and a marvellous variety of Autumnal/Harvest photos viewed. Standouts were Steve's "Misty Haystacks", Sally's "Jam Making", Bunty's "Three Legged Chair War Memorial", Judy's "Windmill" and Margaret's "Dying Fungus ".
The next meeting will be on 23rd Nov at 1.30pm at the Rendal Doocot. There is not a lot of space there so share cars if you can. Thence to ? Tingwall, and Woodwick followed by tea. Hopefully the weather will be ok but check your emails the night before just in case
The project is "A photo suitable for a Christmas Card". This can be anything you like from people, pets, views etc. You can add in script if you want but you don't have to present them as as fully finished cards. I will see if I can find some examples in my Archives.
