the descendants of my paternal grandmother came from Shapinsay then moved to Kirkwall and eventually Edinburgh where most of us still reside.

They appear to have been farmers and members of the Evangelical Union according to the oldest document I can find which is a marriage cert from February 1856 when James Shearer (farmer aged 24) married Mary Tulloch (domestic servant aged 19).

I was wondering if there are still Shearers and Tullochs on the island, if the Evangelical Union is still active and if there is anyone who could help me find out any more info.

Many thanks.

I have just started re-searching my family history and my Grandfather, James Scott was born in Shapinsay in 1888, eventually immigrating to Canada at age 22. I'm looking forward to visiting Orkney and specifically Shapinsay, when's a good time to visit?
