S/12629 Private Peter Duncan of 8th Seaforths and Burray

Today is the centenary of the deaths in the Battle of Passchendaele of two young Orcadian soldiers.  On 22nd August 1917 a third major attack was launched on Frezenberg Ridge, just over two miles north-east of Ypres, by 15th (Scottish) Division.  8th Seaforth Highlanders tried again to capture and hold Hill 37, but met furious German machine gun fire from around Beck House and no significant advance was made.  One of the many killed who were not identified was Peter Duncan of Burray, who died aged only 20.  Peter's service number suggests he had survived fighting in the closing stages of the Battle of the Somme, also at Arras in April and May 1917, as well as the first two attacks at Frezenberg.  His story can be downloaded from the Burray section of the website, or direct using the link below.
