Rousay World War 2 pilot remembered

A short dedication service was held today, in bright spring sunshine, at Rousay War Memorial.  Locals attending included the pupils and staff from Rousay School, while visitors included family members of a young airman, Robert Mainland, who died in the spring 1940 aerial battles against Luftwaffe bombers attacking the Home Fleet in Scapa Flow.  Robert's parents both came from Rousay and he spent his early childhood there, so it is fitting that his sacrifice is now remembered on one of the islands he died defending.  Photos and a brief account of the dedication service can be seen using the link below.
