Craigie Brothers of Deerness

A total of 60 Orcadians are known to have died as a result of the 1916 Battle of the Somme.  The bodies of 24 were not identified and they are among 72,203 British soldiers (including 800 Royal Navy sailors) commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the Somme Missing.  Computers in a Visitor Centre opened there in 2004 contain short biographies and photos of 13 Orcadians, provided to the museum by this website.  Johanna Geddes and family visited Thiepval and Peronne Museums in August, to commemorate the death of her Great Uncle William Craigie, also visited the grave of his brother James, who died in the Battle of Loos.  The Craigie Brothers' story is told in a Word document in the Deerness section of this website, but can be downloaded as a pdf document using the link below.
