Raising children is a challenge, and for families struggling to cope, and who are facing additional challenges on top of daily parenting ones, Home-Start Orkney is there to help.

Our service provides trained volunteer befrienders to families, who are visited regularly in their own homes, with the volunteers providing a friendly, non-judgemental practical and emotional support.  Our volunteers are all parents themselves, and know how hard it can sometimes be.  Our only criteria is that families must have at least one child under the age of 5 years.

We are affiliated to Home-Start UK, and have been supporting families in Orkney since August 2001.  Thanks to our grant from the Big Lottery, we can now offer support to families across Orkney, including the isles.

We are managed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, and have a staff team of 4: three co-ordinators, and an administrative assistant.  The Senior Co-ordinator is responsible for managing the scheme on a daily basis, and reports regularly to the Board of Trustees.  The Board of Trustees meet roughly every 6 weeks: minutes of these meetings are available on request.
