65947 Sapper Alfred George Gibson

Today is the centenary of the death from wounds in a Boulogne military hospital of Alfred G Gibson of Avelshay, Rousay.  He was the first of eighteen men from Rousay and nearby Egilsay and Wyre to die in the Great War and be remembered on Rousay War Memorial.  The second, sailor Isaac Marwick, died only nine days after Alfred, when the steamship Southford struck a mine outside Harwich harbour.  A biography of Alfred Gibson has been added as a Word document to the Rousay section of the website, or can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
