American Sailor's Lyness Burial

The sad story of the death of an American sailor from the USS South Dakota who died when the battleship was attached to the British Home Fleet in July 1943 and was buried at Lyness can be seen using the link below.  Edward Thompson sustained a fatal skull fracture when collided with another sailor near third base during a baseball game ashore, probably on Flotta.  Edward's body was returned to his home state, Kentucky, in March 1949.  The documents and photo of Edward's funeral were provided by Howard Bartholf, whose father also served in the 5th Division of South Dakota's crew.
