Video - Stromness debate

by Unknown - 10:17 on 07 March 2014

On Monday the 3rd of March 2014, Stromness Debating Society asked the question "Should Scotland be an independent country?" Speaking for the Yes campaign was John Aberdein, with Liam McArthur MSP representing Better Together.

Many thanks to Stromness Debating Society, John Aberdein, and Lian McArthur for kindly giving permission to film, especially as a communication breakdown on our part meant they had little warning. It is important that people make an informed decision when the referendum comes, and allowing people that couldn't attend to hear the arguments is valuable. The debate is presented here in full, as agreed with all parties.

This was a very civil and well argued debate on both sides, with some interesting comment and questions from the floor. A show of hands was taken at the end, resulting in 67 Yes votes, 25 No, and 12 Don't Know. No pre-debate polling was undertaken, so whether or not this represents a shift in audience attitudes is unknown.
