Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

U3A Photo Group One - June 2019

Eleven of us met at Fern Valley Reptile Rescue Centre, Tingwall today.
We were met by Lisa the manager and treated to an excellent tour of the centre, told about the various animals, and introduced to the latest addition to the centre, the ring tailed lemurs, which are found in Madagascar, but these young ladies came from Chester Zoo. We were treated to feeding time with the Meerkats, and watched in amazement as they froliced in the the sand.
The rescue centre has been opened for 2 years now, and is a fascinating place to visit. You can also adopt an animal and your name will then be displayed on the wall beside your adopted animal.
After an enjoyable tour, we had lunch in the cafe, which everyone seemed to enjoy. Thanks to Gill and staff for looking after us so well.
We then looked at the photos from our Caithness trip, with many varied subjects, but the majority being of Lotte Glob's ceramics at Loch Erribol. Others included the varied birds seen at the bird observatory, Kyle of Tongue, the beautiful village of Talmine and Cocoa Mountain at Durness and Balnakeill Village. Thank you to Hilary and Yvonne for arranging this outing.
The topic of the month was "Happiness" and this included smiling children, adults, dogs and other animals and things that made us happy, like our favourite places, and happy moments.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 24th July. Sally Hallam is due to arrange this. Further details will be forthcoming on her return from Fair Isle.
The Project is " Insects " which can include Butterflies and moths etc.
