U3A Chairman's Blog - February 2019

The Orkney U3A committee met on 12th February and discussed plans for the next few months. The Treasurer reported that finances were healthy, with no need to propose an increase in subscription. Membership had risen yet further to 120.
The AGM in March would be followed by a photo-quiz prepared by Tim. All office bearers were eligible and prepared to continue for the coming year, but Hilary Morrell and Fiona Knox would be standing down from the committee and were thanked for their services. Nominations for others to stand as ordinary committee members are welcome.
The programme of talks at general meetings in the coming year is almost complete (see website) and should hopefully be available in full at the AGM. A small group of volunteers were taking it in turns to provide write-ups for the Orcadian, and Barbara had kindly taken on the task of organising a rota of groups to provide refreshments after general meeting talks.
Most groups were in a healthy state, with 5-15 members, and while some, such as Music Appreciation and Play Reading, could not expand further, others would welcome new members. Contact details for group leaders are given in the Groups section on the website. Peter had canvassed opinion on new groups and interest in the more popular ideas would be further explored at the AGM. While many suggestions had been made few had been proposed by more than one or two people and, most importantly, none had attracted volunteers to lead them.
