Walking Group One 25th April 2024
Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.
Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.
The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay
Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )
The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

The Music Appreciation Group met at Glenys’s house on Monday, the 7th, for the January meeting. David’s choice of theme, ‘Music highlighting stringed instruments’, produced a real feast of wonderful music, with movements from the following:
Vivaldi’s “Concerto in C major for mandolin, two violins, viola, cello, bass and organ”, performed by The Soloists from Zagreb;
Ravel’s “String Concerto in F major”, performed by the Ad Libitum Quartet;
Schubert’s “String Quintet in C major”, performed by the Pavel Haas Quartet and Danjulo Ishizaka on cello;
Massenet’s “Meditation”, played by Nigel Kennedy;
Chopin’s “Cello Sonata in G minor, Op 65, played by Maria Kliegel and Bernd Glemser;
Aly Bain playing “Dr James Donaldson” and “The Anvil Reel”;
Elgar’s “Cello Concerto”, played by Robert Cohen with the London Philharmonic Orchestra;
Bach’s “Violin Concerto No 2 in E major;
Rodrigo’s “Concierto Serenata for harp and orchestra”, played by Los Romeros with the Academy of St Martin’s in the Fields;
Villa Lobos’s “Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra”, with Sean Shiba on guitar;
Fauré’s “String Quartet in E minor”, played by the Ad Libitum Quartet;
Josef Suk’s “Serenade for String Orchestra”;
Turlough O’Carolan’s “Ode to Whiskey” and “O’Carolan’s Receipt”, played by Mark Harmer on the Celtic harp;
Music from John Williams’ soundtrack to the film “Schindler’s List”, played by Janine Jansen on the violin;
“22 Stomps from the Swamps”, from the Kings of Cajun, played by Nathan Abshire and Les Filles du Canada;
A cello and orchestral arrangement of Dvorak’s “Songs my Mother taught me”;
Beethoven’s “Violin Concerto in D”, played by Josef Suk;
Joseph Haydn’s “Cassation in C” for lute, violin, viola and cello.
The next meeting, on Monday, 4 February, will take place at Kate’s house in Finstown.
