Following the cancellation of the visit to Shapinsay because of unsuitable weather, nine of us met for coffee at Sheila Fleet's cafe. We perused the pictures from Eday first. Lots of photos of the Stone of Setter with and without people. Vinaquoy Cairn was another interesting subject both the interior and externally. The Kittiwakes and Tystie on the pier were popular and a single photo of captured Sillocks against a very green background stood out. The Submarine produced the most photos with the Hydroplane controls, the Periscope and the banks of dials to the fore. A great day out and with many thanks to the Eday Ranger for showing us all the photographic spots.

 

"Pavements/Paths" was the project for the month. What a variety we got from Swiss paths to the A9, the Khyber Pass, as well as cobbled roads from Stromness to Edinburgh and some lovely low level shots from the Strynd. However, my photos of the Jenks Sculptures at Jupiter Art Land caused the most comment. Jupiter Art Land is just outside Edinburgh and is a Sculpture Park that will take you at least 2 hours to walk around. It is ideal to visit on a sunny day and the sculptures are very photogenic. I have appended a few other photos to give you a flavour but well known artists like Andy Galsworthy and Anish Kapoor are represented. The indoor Red Sculpture is made out of red disposable cutlery if you look carefully. Many thanks to all who contributed to such a great variety of images.

 

After coffee, we defied the the forecast to do it's worst and went to Newark Beach. We got a good hour there looking at the birds, seals, slip and shore before the forecast got it's own back and sent in a shower to send us, via Dingieshowe, back home for lunch. A much better morning out than we had expected but Shapinsay is still going to be visited next year when the cafe is open again.

 

The next meeting is Wednesday 24th October getting together in the Square in St Margaret's Hope at 10.30. Tom has prepared a list of 15 photographically interesting sights that he wants us to put our own interpretation on. Lunch will probably taken at The Sands Hotel in Burray but more information nearer the time.

 

The month's project is "Autumn" so get going before the gales blow all the leaves off the trees!
