Photography Group One 1st May 2024

Ten of us met at the roadside Car Park in Finstown on a day with little wind and some low cloud but with the sun trying to get through. We set off to the Community Garden where we found lots of lovely colourful flowers out as well as tree buds bursting forth. The Burn was a great source of images.

Jocky Wood was painting a new picnic bench with the appropriately titled Wood Stain! He does a great deal of the work on the garden as well as his own just up the hill opposite.

Six of us then headed for Binsgarth Woods.

The track was muddy in places but the spring flowers were out all the way. There was Pink Purselaine, Wild Garlic, Wood Anemone,  and the invasive Salmon Berry. Since the tree leaves were not blanketing the light, one was able to get good photos close up. The Burn had lots of interesting tree roots and hanging tyres and ropes from the kids' dare devil antics. Then it was back to the shop for rolls and along to Tom's house for a cuppa and a nice piece of cake. Thank you very much for that Tom and all the stories too.

The next meeting will be going to Westray on Wednesday 29th May for the day. Arrangement will be made nearer the time.

All in all a lovely morning, taking time to look at the flowers and listen to the Wrens, Willow Warblers, Chaffinches and Robins singing in the woods.

Keep clicking.

Walking Group One 25th April 2024

Five hardy souls collected today at Happy Valley for the first Hill Walk of the year .The temperature was cool with a North Easterly wind blowing and a hint of rain on arrival.

Off we set heading towards Russadale Quarry, spotting a Buzzard on the way.Turning into the footpath we remained sheltered from the wind all the way to the top of the hill.

The sun was out at the Quarry and a Greenshank was feeding at the edge of the Lochan. Then it was up the Peat road to the summit with spectacular views across Stenness and Harray Lochs, plus a view of the Closed Road beyond the Watch Stone. On the other side we looked over the Flow and down towards the Oil Platform and South Ronaldsay

Then it was back down after a stop for a snack and finally a walk around Happy Valley itself. The Daffodils planted by James and others were looking lovely and the Bluebells are days away from opening. Then it was on to a well deserved lunch at the Pier Cafe, having walked 4 miles and gone up 800 feet (and down again )

The next walk will be on Friday 24th May and hopefully more hills and views.

Keep moving.

Today the U3A Botanical group made it to Hunda..cool dry and calm, a nice walk along the cliff top then up to the highest point for panoromic views of Scapa Flow.  Cuppa at the Sands followed by ice cream at the Italian Chapel...some nice plants too! Another island bagged. What next?

The next botanical outing is to Binscarth Woods on 3rd November lead by Moira. We meet in the carpark opposite Baikies at 10.30am. A lot depends on the weather, usual kit of lenses, cameras, binoculars, waterproofs, lunch etc. Tea at the Pomona afterwards (TBA)

Low winter sunshine enhanced a very enjoyable and leisurely stroll through the leaf litter in Binscarth Woods yesterday morning. A surprising number of plants were still in flower including pink purslane, daisy and buttercup with lesser celandine bulbils already sprouting for next years display. Many colourful fungi were found with a very photogenic troop of "Earth Tongue" parading on some lovely moss clad rotting logs. Although most trees were bare, some trees still in their autumn glory provided a background for the photographers with a beech tree being particularly striking against the blue skies. Alders were clinging on to their cone-like fruit from this year but tight new catkins were formed ready for next spring. Lots of LBJs confused us but wrens and robins left us in no doubt as to their identity! Lunch at the Standing Stones Hotel rounded off a splendid outing. Thanks to Moira who organised it.
Who says winter is dead?

Botanical Group had an excellent walk from the Ness battery towards Warbeth today. Cool but dry. Plenty of birds to see and ID, seals, vole tracks and interesting geology. Dandelion, Daisy and Annual Meadow Grass in flower. Scurvy Grass not far behind. Nice lunch in the Standing Stones... next trip out will be a walk near Kirkwall in January 2011 organised by Sally

A good outing to South Ronaldsay was enjoyed inspite of the cool breeze. First we checked the well established Sea Kale plant which we were pleased to find in good health with two new young plants growing close by! Further along the beach we found several Oysterplant colonies already in bloom and the Blysmus sedge growing right down to the tideline. Seals, terns and lots of Eider duck around but not a chick in sight.
A nasty shower forced us into taking shelter at the Sands of Wright but it was time for lunch anyway!
A short walk along to the Millenium Stone by St Peter's kirk blew away any cobwebs. Beside the kirk is a wonderful planticru with beautifully tilled soil growing tatties, leeks, artichokes, salad crop and fruit bushes etc. - not a weed or stone to be seen.
To complete our outing we visited the Hoxa Tapestery Gallery (checking out how the new cafe was coming along) and the Loft and Workshop in the Hope rounding off with ice cream at the Orkney Winery on our way home!!!
Thanks to Effy for organising and Caroline for driving.
Sal
