Shapinsay's Way Ahead Programme (SWAP)

Shapinsay Development Trust Launch Turbine Funding Programme

The Shapinsay’s Way Ahead Programme

This month will see the first transfer of money earned by our Community owned wind turbine, Whirly, to the Development Trust.
Over the life of the turbine, in excess of twenty years, Shapinsay Renewables Limited, the trading company managing the commercial operation of the electricity wind generator, will transfer all its available net income to the Trust, to be wholly used for Shapinsay community benefit. The money will be used for the turbine funding initiative, to be known as “The Shapinsay’sWay Ahead Programme” (the SWAP) and to which all residents, groups, organisations, or businesses based in Shapinsay can apply for financial support. Projects must provide clear benefit to the wider community of Shapinsay.

The Directors plan to host an official Opening of the turbine itself in the near future, when we will take the opportunity to publicise the application process, be available to discuss how applications will be scrutinised, and to fully explain the selection and award criteria. The initial phase of the funding programme will be a pilot exercise, lasting three months to the 31st August this year; at that time we will undertake a full review and make any improvements thought necessary.

However, if you’d like to apply you can start the process right away by speaking to one of the Trust’s staff, Debbie, Kasha, or Alan: you’ll find their contact numbers below. In addition, the key forms are available here.

1. The Enquiry Form, to be completed at the initial approach to staff,
2. The Guidelines for Applicants, which give clear criteria as to how SWAP grants can be successfully applied for.

We are delighted to open this programme to everyone in Shapinsay: in one sense this is a culmination of many hours of voluntary effort given unstintingly by a wide range of local folk over a number of years; in another sense it is a new beginning for our community. It is my sincere wish that this fund will really make a difference to the island over the next 20 years or so and truly keep Shapinsay, Way Ahead.
