Holm Regatta 1981

Holm Sailing Club held its annual regatta on Saturday July 25 with 29 boats attending.

It was a rather grey day which started bright and breezy and ended with drizzly rain and calm conditions, causing the last race to be run once round a shortened course.

Grateful thanks are due to the Kirkwall officials Mr. W. Scollay, T. Brough and A. Firth for keeping race times. Also to the crews of the various rescue boats who gave safety cover during the day.

At the end of sailing, competitors and helpers sat down to a welcome meal provided by the ladies' committee and the prizes were presentedby Mrs. Ruby Foubister to the various winners.

Kirkwall Regatta 1981

Kirkwall Regatta had 60 boats

Orkney Sailing Club were host to the Scalloway Boating Club during their annual regatta held in Kirkwall Bay over the week-end of 31st July to 2nd Aug.

The race between the two clubs, for the Scalloway Cup, was held on the Friday evening, with a very strong West North West wind blowing. Scalloway put forward 13 boats consisting of 505s, Fireballs, Enterprises, 420 and Albacores from the Unst club. The home team comprised mainly Albacore with Rockets, one Enterprise, Wayfarer and 505. The strong wind favoured the Shetlanders, who could use their trapeze gear to the fullest, giving them a convincing win with 151 points to 102.

Saturday's racing started with the class races and with the wind increasing to westerly force 5 by dinner time, the many spectators at vantage points around the bay saw 20 capsizes with 7 upturned at one time- mainly in the Rocket Class. Sixty boats were on the water during the morning including 14 from Shetland and 3 Catamarans.

The afternoon's racing was postponed until Sunday, the wind having moderated and turned South West. Conditions were ideal for sailing in which 24 boats took part with separate races for 3 catamarans and 2 yachts.

Orkney Sailing Club are deeply indebted to the many rescue boats and crews whose assistance was unfailing and much needed, particularly the RNLI and HM Coastguards.

The ladies are also thanked for providing such splendid fare over the three days, which was very much appreciated by all. Special mention must be made towards all the Scalloway and Unst visitors, without whom, all the happy friendships which were made and renewed over the week-end, would be lost. The club hopes to share many regattas to come with such genuine friends and keen sailors.
