Affordable Warmth
Following the Home Energy Check survey carried out in March 2009 to which 68% of residents replied, the Community Powerdown Officer was successful in bidding to the Climate Challenge Fund for £40,000 for the Affordable Warmth Project. The key points of this project are: Every household will be offered a FREE Full Energy Assessment carried out by Orkney Energy Agency, which includes an energy efficiency audit and thermal imaging audit The various grant packages on offer will be accessed to help each household improve their insulation and in some cases have a new central heating system installed Loft workers will help us prepare our loft for insulation and our property will be stored safely whilst this takes place. Progress As a result of this project, 105 homes have now been visited and benefit from energy advice and support. 10 homes have been referred for Stage 4 of the Energy Assistance Package which could lead to improved insulation measures including loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, draught proofing, thermal curtain linings and a new central heating system. 32 homes will benefit from subsidised insulation top-ups under the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target scheme, where the insulation in their lofts will be brought up to the recommended minimum of 270mm. 67 homes are currently taking part in the Owl Electricity Monitor loan scheme where they have access to an electricity monitor to help them gauge how they use their electricity. Where Are We Now? The Development Trust is working in partnership with Changeworks Resources for Life to employ an Energy Adviser who will make door to door visits to each of the houses across the 3 islands to offer energy advice and free insulation top-ups under the Home Insulation Scheme. This scheme is open to all householders to provide a top-up of loft insulation, free of charge if you already have some loft insulation, irrespective of the size of the loft. Approximately 1 month after the visit, if your home needs an insulation top-up, an insulation surveyor will make an appointment to conduct a survey of your loft to determine how much insulation is required. They will also arrange the installations which are expected to be completed across all houses in Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre by the end of October. If your home is council or housing association owned, the Home Insulation Scheme people will make the local authority or housing association aware that the property needs insulation. Cavity wall insulation also forms part of the Home Insulation Scheme. For further information visit www.homeinsulationscheme.co.uk or call the Energy Savings Trust on 0800 512012.
