Orkney Pony Club held a Combined Training competition on Sunday 11th July at the Dounby Show Park , incorporating dressage and showjumping. Once again we had mix fortunes with the weather with our youngest competitors competing in the worst of the afternoons rain and thunder. Many thanks must go to judges on the day Sarah Swannie for judging the dressage phase and to Nick Coward for judging the jumping phase and to the West Mainland Agricultural Society for the use of the Show park. Orkney is going to HOYS!
Orkney Pony Club has qualified for HOYS after winning at the Zonesheld at the OldLanark Racecourse on Saturday 10th July. The Senior Orkney A Team ofEilidh Muir riding Angel, Ingrid Giggle on Pepe, Anna Tait on Rosie, Jack Reid on Edd, Eula Merriman on Zara and Rheanne Williamson as the reserve rider will be heading for the Horse of the Year Show at the NEC in Birmingham from the 6th to the10th of October to compete in the Prince Philip Cup Final. They had to beat off stiff competition from teams from the North West of England, Northern Ireland and the Scottish branches from Eglington, Angus, Strathearn, Bennachie, Fife Hunt, Kirkintilloch, Lanark and Ross-shire, and this win at the Zones also qualified them to appear at the Scottish Horse of the Year Show(SHOYS) at Ingliston at start of October, the week before HOYS. The Team & Supporters would like to thank Andy & Susan Reid from Angus Pony Club, and Alistair & Morag Brewster who welcome "Camp Orkney" several times a year; a lot of ponies, bairns & noise for the Brewsters, giving the opportunity forthe Orkney teams to compete south. One of the parents also said that this would not have been possible without the provision of Indoor Riding facilities in Orkney so that the children & ponies can keep training during Orkney's unpredictable weather, and also toGames Coach Sarah Reid.Sarahsaid she was delighted that Orkney had qualified for HOYS, one of the biggest equestrian events in the country, and there will be some hard work ahead for the team who will have to fit in regular practices between now & then. They also think that the pony Edd - proper name Tuskerbister First Edition, bred by Marlene Rorie at Fea in Orphir, will be the first Orkney bred pony to appear at the Horse of the Year Show - unless someone knows otherwise!
