About the Festival
Running since 2013, Orkney Nature Festival has given thousands of people the opportunity to enjoy, and be inspired by, the magnificent Orcadian wildlife. Events have included cruises around some of the largest cliffs in Britain, nature photography classes with local experts, guided walks amongst choruses of birdsong, and much more.
Orkney Nature Festival is collaborative project coordinated by the local RSPB Scotland team on behalf of partners around Orkney, including businesses, community groups and individual volunteers. Join us in celebrating and enjoying nature in Orkney.
Orkney Nature Festival 2022
RSPB Scotland is delighted to announce that the Orkney Nature Festival is coming back, following two years of covid cancelations, with four days of events taking place between Thursday 19th – Sunday 22nd May 2022.
Since the festival began in 2013, thousands of people have enjoyed over 170 different events on islands across Orkney. This celebration of the county’s unique natural heritage and wildlife is coordinated by the local RSPB Scotland team and features nature-themed events organised and run by local groups, businesses, and individuals. Organisations involved in developing the upcoming festival include Orkney Field Club, Historic Environment Scotland, and the Orkney Native Wildlife Project.
Stewart Bain, RSPB Scotland’s Communications & Events Officer in Orkney, said: “In the three months I have worked for the RSPB, so many people have mentioned that they miss the Orkney Nature Festival and asked if it is happening this year, so it’s clear the festival has become a popular feature of Orkney’s busy annual events calendar. It is tricky trying to plan when restrictions and guidelines can change quickly, but with an emphasis on outdoor events, and more online content, I am confident we can produce a fantastic programme for 2022.”
In previous years the festival has included puffin watching in Westray, beachcombing in Sanday, and wildlife walks in Wyre. There have been song writing workshops, creative writing courses and snorkelling safaris. Orkney Nature Festival is a great opportunity for anyone working in the fields of nature, wildlife & tourism across the islands to showcase what they do and help celebrate the abundance of natural wonders on our doorstep.
Stewart said: “From my time with RSPB Scotland, I have seen how willing everyone on the team, and the wider community of nature lovers throughout Orkney, are to share their knowledge and expertise. I would like to see an inclusive Orkney Nature Festival that has events for all ages, abilities, and levels of experience, but this depends on people coming forward and offering to get involved. I encourage anyone who thinks they may be able to put on an event to get in touch with me to discuss ideas.”
