Beach race Weekend

The 13th and 14th of September is the beach race weekend. This is the 19th beach race weekend the Orkney Motocross Club has held since 1989.The first race had 35 riders at the start line and last year’s race had 100. The weekend consists of 2 meetings, the first being on the Saturday at the Orkney Motocross Club’s own track at Heddle Hill. This track is one of the better tracks in Scotland and has been revamped for the weekend. It consists of uphill climbs and downhill sections with many man made jumps and step ups.

The Sunday is the main event, The 3 hour beach race will be held at the Bu farm in Burray. It has been at this location since the race started in 1989 thanks to Billy and Erlend Dass. The track will be an interesting and technical track made to the usual standards and about 2 ½ miles long

The people coming, come from all over the UK, like Alan Reid who has done every year except last year and is back again this year, his first year on a Husky 250. By all accounts he was a good social rider!! I wonder if he is using the Husky again this year. Another rider who has done almost every year is current Scottish twinshock champion Paul Chiappa, Maybe the old Maico is getting used. Remember a four stroke has not won a beach race yet, is this the year?
Last year’s winner was Ricky Mair and rumour has it he is coming back again this year. Other riders include John Soutar and Barry Gray.
The Orkney boys will be there too, David Henning (the current Orkney champion) was the highest placed Orkney lad in 5th place last year but he has major competition this year with Mark Garson, Stuart Craigie, Graham Thomson, Roy Watt, Dean Macleod and Erlend Dass. David has to work hard this year! Also their first year in the adult class is the first 3 places from the senior school boys last year. Fraser Norrie, winner of the senior school boys beach race last year, Local lad Danny Milne and William Mackenzie (not Billy) from Caithness. Also local lad John Marshall who finished 5th overall in this year’s Scottish Senior Schoolboy Championship. There may be some upsets this year???

This could be you!!!!.
