New National Nursing Memorial

More than 1,500 British Commonwealth nurses died while serving in the two World Wars.  While most are remembered on local war memorials, until now there has not been a national memorial which shows all their names.  On 4th June a new memorial will be dedicated at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, to remember all the British Commonwealth nurses who died.  The patrons of the new memorial are Lord and Lady Fellowes, who visited Orkney in June 2016 for the centenary commemoration of the loss of HMS Hampshire.  Kirkwall Royal British Legion has sponsored on the Nursing Memorial the name of Kathleen Walker of Westray, the only Orcadian nurse known to have died serving.  Kathleen's story can be seen in the Westray section of the website, or downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
