S/11249 Private Magnus Brown of Sanday

Today is the centenary of the death of another Orcadian killed in grim fighting during the Battle of the Somme to capture the (ruined) village of Longueval in mid-July 1916.  Magnus Brown was born in Firth,  but spent most of his school days living on Sanday.  He was killed serving in 1st Gordon Highlanders on 18th July, probaby by furious German shell-fire during a major counter-attack.  A Word biography of Magnus, with brief details of his brother James killed at Passchendaele in 1917, has been added to the Sanday section of the website.  It can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
