HMS Vanguard Disaster remembered

For many years the greatest Royal Navy tragedy in Orkney waters, the loss by internal explosions in July 1917 of the battleship HMS Vanguard, was almost forgotten.  That began to change when the 843 names Roll of Honour was established in 2002 and a visit to the Vanguard Memorial at Lyness has become part of the annual calendar for the local service veteran organisations in most of the last ten years.  One of the two crews of namesake Royal Navy nuclear submarine HMS Vanguard visited the scene of the tragedy last month.   A couple of photos and a brief description of the annual wreath laying visit to Lyness today can be seen using the link below.
