12/328 Private James Cooper of Kirkwall

Today is the centenary of the death, from wounds received in the initial landing at Anzac on Gallipoli, of James Cooper of Kirkwall.  James was wounded serving with the Auckland Battalion and survived the journey to Netley Hospital in Hampshire.  After his death there on 24th June 1915, he was one of only a handful of Orcadian Great War soldiers whose bodies were returned for burial in the islands.  A Word page biography of James Cooper is available in the Kirkwall section of the website, or it can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
