Sister Elizabeth Gray, TFNS of Westray

As the centenary anniversary of the start of the Great War has approached, The National Archives in London and those of several other Commonwealth countries have been busy making new material available to view online.  TNA has added in Series WO 399 the Great War service records of both Territorial and QAIMNS Nurses.  They include a 50-page file for Elizabeth Gray of Noltland, Westray.  She was mobilized in the TFNS in August 1914 to nurse at Oldmill Military Hospital, Aberdeen for three years.  Elizabeth then crossed to France and was Mentioned in Despatches for valuable and dedicated service there.  A photo of Elizabeth, also one of her brother Johnnie, and a Word document about her war service (with additional material kindly provided by her great niece, Rose Reeves) have been added to the Westray section of the website.  Elizabeth's story can be downloaded direct as a pdf using the link below.
