Albert Hancox, Royal Marine Artillery

Coast Gun Batteries were hastily positioned to protect the Grand Fleet in its new base in Scapa Flow when the Great War started.  The local RGA Territorial gunners manning them were joined in 1915 by several hundred Royal Marine gunners.  The biography of Albert Hancox, RMA, who served at Ness Battery, married a local woman and stayed here after the war to raise a family, has been added to the Stromness section of the website.
