Doubles title for Leslie and Moodie

There was another great turnout this time for the League Doubles as 56 players, 28 pairs, entered for the second last ranking points event of the season.

The holders Kevin Gray and Derek Firth made the semi-finals, only to go down to the very strong pairing of Stevie Linklater and Robbie Stanger.

Kirkwall Open champion Ivan Leslie and Michael Moodie were carving up everyone, beating Stevie Moar and Raymie Rendall to book their spot in the final.

A big crowd witnessed four players turn on the style, with Ivan in devestating mood. Leading 3-2, Stevie and Robbie seemed to lose their way, as Ivan and Michael took the next three for a great 5-3 win. Ivan hit two 180s and a 174 and was well backed up by Michael who had a couple of telling finishes.

Points table: Robbie Stanger, 44; Kevin Gray, 42; Ivan Leslie, 28; Stevie Linklater, 25; Ian Linklater, 21; Derek Firth, 20; Alan Gray, 18; Ian Findlay, 18; Ryan Tulloch, 16; Leigh Shearer, 14; Stevie Moar, 14; Billy Ward 13 and Michael Moodie, 13.

The Williamsons ‘A’ League is still up for grabs as the Legion dropped two points after being held to a 6-6 draw by the Untouchables ‘A’.

The Legion still require four points from three matches, with the Commodores eight points and game in hand behind. The Golf Club now only have a very slim chance of winning the title, while Sanday are out of the running to finish in the top three despite beating Untouchables 10-2.

Three teams are trying to avoid relegation. Sands ‘2’ beat the Legion Arrows 7-5 to leave them in 10th, one point above the Arrows and one point behind Quoyburray ‘B’.

Three teams have a chance of title glory in the Williamsons ‘B’ League, with Quoyburray leading the way after a 9-3 defeat of St Ola ‘B’. Shapinsay beat the Murray Arms 8-4 to keep on Quoyburray’s tail, while Tankerness lost ground, losing 8-4 to the Bilco Boys.

St Ola ‘B’ look favourites for the wooden spoon, while Motorhoose and St Ola have a straight fight between the second bottom spot.

This Friday it’s the Tom Notman Memorial Singles Cup, it’s for any player who has ever played in the KDDL. Tom was a founder member of the league and was the president for ten years.

Next Friday, March 24, is the big one — the League Singles. It is also the last ranking points event and with points very close, there should be a big entry.
