New B League leaders

What a poor turnout for the B League Singles, with only 11 pairs entering. That is only a third of the registered players, and the B players asked for this event, but have failed to support it and it puts the future of the competition in doubt.

But having said that, it didn't detract from the standard of the darts and never more so than in the final between the Sands Ryan Tulloch and Paul Hourston and the Fanooks Trevor Shearer and Ian Findlay. The Sands boys took the first two legs only for the Fanooks pair to equal at 2-2. The Sands were back in front at 3-2, but it could have been the other way round. So, only needing one more leg, the boys from across the Barriers started the sixth leg  steadily and both pairs were even all the way down, but a great 105 finish from Paul took the silverware across the water for the first time.

It is on to the big one on Friday night, Friday, with the League Doubles being played in the Masonic Club. Names in by 7.30pm. It is the second-last ranking points event and with the points being very close, a dozen or so players could themselves in a selection position.

It is just about a two-horse race in the Williamson’s A League, as the top two beat the two nearest challengers. The Legion beat fourth-placed Untouchables A 10-2 and by the same score, the Untouchables beat third-placed Wanderers, who are now 12 points off the top, with eight games to play.
The Commodore are now in fourth place after defeating bottom team RBL2, also by 10-2. It was the favourite score of the week, as the Golf Club also won 10-2 over Wanderers B, but lost their other game 8-4 to Quoyburray B. It wasn’t a good week for Wanderers B, as they lost their other game 7-5 against Quoyburray and are now second bottom, but six points clear of RBL2.

The Williamson’s B League has new leaders, as the Fanooks leap frog Sanday, who didn’t have a game, with a 10-2 win out in Burray over Sands 2. The Murray Arms had mixed fortunes, winning 7-5 over The Shore, but going down 8-4 to the Likely Lads and The Shore got a share of the points after being held to a 6-6 draw by Deerness. Shore 2 are keeping the pressure on the top two with a 8-4 win over Tankerness and not far away are the Sands 10-2 winners over the Bilco Boys.

There were lots of 180’s from Stevie Linklater, Wayne Monkman, Neil Drever, Colin Ross, Ross Donaldson, Des Gillespie, Keith Brumpton, Ross Donaldson again, Paul Hourston, Andrew Watson, Grant Harrold and two from Paul Foubister and Ivan Leslie. Kevin Gray hit three, which puts him top of the table on 12 and takes the total scored so far to 208.

There were high finishes of 100 from Brian Moar and Ivan Leslie, 102 and 104 from Kevin Gray, 103 from Archie Yule, 105 from Paul Hourston, 106 from Robbie Stanger, 108 from Willie Bremner, 114 from Lee Macpherson and Derek Firth, 118 from Neil Croy, 124 from Paul Foubister, 138 from Ian Wilkie and 150 from Paddy Kirkpatrick.

Tickets for the presentation night on April 23 are on sale from the secretary, Jim Scollie.

Congratulations to the Legion team who won the Northern Area Team, Doubles and Singles events over in Thurso. They now travel south later on for the Scottish National Championships, representing the Highlands and Islands area.
