Close at the top as leagues near end

The final week of action in the Williamsons Butchers sponsored KDDL leagues is upon us, and the destination of both trophies is still to be decided. The Untouchables are firm favourites now in the 'A' league with their win over the Bilco Boys meaning they need only a draw with the Exiles to clinch it, whilst Sanday will require a win over the Golf Club couples with the Exiles doing them a favour.

In the 'B' league the Murray Arms narrowly overcame Tankerness which sealed promotion for both themselves and the Muppets in the process. Tied on points, the Muppets hold a superior game difference and in a plot twist that could not have been predicted at the drawing of the fixtures, they meet each other in a title sealing shootout in the Murray Arms this week.

The League mixed doubles took place in the Legion last Friday evening, with a place at the Orkney Championships out West on 28th April up for grabs. Defending champions Brian Moar and Lauren Gilmour were robbed by COVID-19 of their opportunity to become Orkney champions last time around and they scraped their way through to the final courtesy of some red hot doubling. Joining them there were Gary Wilson and Katie Croy who had wrestled their way through the top half of the draw. The final itself was pretty one sided, with Katie being the star of the show with her treble hitting prowess as she carried Gary to the title!

The final ranking points competition of the season, the League Singles, will be held in the Masonic this Friday evening. Both the main and 'B' ranking points tables are very tight, with places in both teams still very much up for grabs. In the event of a tie, best of 5 playoff matches will be held in the Legion at 7pm on Monday 20th, followed by a meeting of the top 9 and county captain at 7.30pm to select the 3 wildcard picks and reserves for the Intercounty match.

180s were scored by: Robbie Stanger, Wayne Small, Gary Wilson, Kenny Gunn, Gordon Rendall, Bruce Moar, Kevin Gray, Derek Firth, Alan Findlay, Paul Foubister, David Shearer, Robbie Norquoy, Nicol Gray, Aaron Mitchell and Stevie Linklater. Michael Muir and George Low both registered scores of 171, whilst Paul Foubister and Billy Ward both scored 177.

High Checkouts: Kenny Gillespie 100, Brian Moar 101, Hamish Baillie 102, Brian Stevenson 106, Kevin Peace 107, Ian Linklater 109, Bruce Moar 110, Keith Bain 112, Robbie Stanger 116, Ian Findlay 117, Colin Kirkpatrick 117 and Derek Firth 149.
