Otter Bank in The Basin, 1962

Alan sends in this picture taken by his father in law, Andy Wylie.

The picture was possibly taken at the same time as the Corn Slip picture added a couple of days ago, and this time is taken from the West Pier. The white boat in the foreground is the Otter Bank, the floating bank that sailed around the north isles for the National Commercial Bank (now part of the Royal Bank of Scotland).

Comments:
This picture also shows Norwegian Line Fishing Boats which were common visitors to Kirkwall & Stromness in the summers of the 60s (no Crows nest so not whalers) Also the Earl Sigurd or Thorfinn moored outside the Harbour Office so this was probably just after the "Orcadia" came into service. The boat next the "Otter Bank" is the "Shalder" still owned by the Tait family

I remember the Norwegian boats coming in past Crockness when we were kids . They had a distinctive .tonk.tonk. sound from their single cylinder Bolander engines, at least I think they were singles, and we could hear them from East Moaness, where I was born and raised.

My father, Douglas Robertson, bought the Otter from Maxwell in Kirkwall in 1959 or thereabouts. He added the wheel house, toilet, galley and new engine to the launch. When sold to the Bank the boat was renamed Otterbank.

We have a beautiful painting by Harry Berry showing the Otterbank in 1965 - the exhibitionists

Was Davie Irvine skipper of this boat for a time? I seem to mind he was a boat builder !!! I live in Fraserburgh and my parents were great friends with Davie and Peggie .

Yes, he was the skipper. The Otterbank (along with information on its history) is currently in the Romney Hut at the Scapa Visitor Centre at Lyness undergoing refurbishment.
