Grant Leonard's Mystery thing (picture #26769) and how it might look in use, with pole, retaining screw and rope in place. On the other hand, this may be totally misleading as I really haven't a clue.

For tidiness's sake, I should add that Grant has said the 'end-cap or ferrule' is in fact solid, so the above speculation is off the mark.
