Arrival of SS Thorfinn in North Ronaldsay

Arrival in North Ronaldsay, August 1960. SS Earl Thorfinn alongside. Mixed cargo on the pier ready for loading. The Ektachrome colours on this transparency have survived well. I believe the pier mounted crane was for hoisting the local mail boat onto a trolley on a railway track which ran up the pier.

There's a most attractive 'painterly' quality to this Karl. If someone had told me it was the work of a first-rate illustrator, based on a photograph, I think I'd have believed it; I can almost see the outlines around the individual figures. (Not that I think handpainted pictures are necessarily superior to photos in all situations!) And it's a true 'candid' shot, with not one person giving a hoot for the photographer. Simply delightful!
I was using Kodachrome in 1962 but soon switched - probably unwisely since some of its dyes proved unstable over time - to Agfachrome because it was a little bit faster. Well, twice as fast in fact - 50 ASA compared with regular Kodachrome's 25.
