Comments:
Third from right, front row, is Stewart Wilson who was also organist and choirmaster of Victoria Street Church. A Fair Islander, he worked for 'Pia' Anderson Sr, but could turn his hand to almost anything. He often took me with his son Stewart jr sailing in his dinghy 'Fridarey'. (He also enrolled me as a reluctant bass chorister in my last couple of years at school.) Though a serious-minded man, he wasn't as severe as he looks here.

Anything known about John Banks please?

I know very little about the 'John Banks' in this photo Jane. Couldn't even be certain his first name was in fact John. But I'll tell you the little I think I remember. He had a shop/cafe at 7 Alfred Street, Stromness, in the late 1940s and most of the 1950s, and it's in my mind that he served as Purser on the St Ola for a time, but that could well be incorrect. He had a son, Stewart, and a daughter Bryce. I think they may have both emigrated. I can't recall anything about Mrs Banks, but I think she ran the business jointly with her husband.

I might have added that I believe his grandson (Stewart's son) became a Captain in the Royal Australian Navy.

That looks more like Arthur Young than Sydney Young near the top.
