Pole Star alongside NLB pier, Stromness ca 1960. This pic, taken from the St Ola II, may or may not help to provide an answer to Dennis Campbell's nearly 5-years-old query with picture #2925.

Took me a while to find my bearings in this one. What is the two storey house to the right of Red Roof approx where Ridgeways stands now?

Think that is the Hesperus, that pic must date from the early to mid 70s.

Ian, the house just for'ard of the Pole Star's mast (pity it's not abaft: I've have loved to say, "The one you're after is abaft the after mast of the craft" - a bit daft, but you might have laughed) is the one I always think of as John Rae's house - not the Arctic explorer John Rae, but the newsagent & bookseller John Rae. I believe when he had it built it was one of the most 'modern' in town. The tall gable-ends give it away, while the sloping site allows a more conventional wing on the back - enlarged further, I think, since this pic was taken.

Ian, in my previous comment I said the house you were inquiring about was formerly John Rae's. Now, in an old Orkney phonebook, I have stumbled upon John Rae's address - Ridgeways. I never knew the house was called that. Shame on me!

No Kenny, it's the Pole Star right enough, and the date would be close to 1960, if only because the camera that took the shot didn't last long after that date.
