Opening run of Orkney Motor Cycle Club

Taken by Tome Kent on 27th May 1914, at the back of the Girnel, next to where Tullock's Garage would have been at the time (I think)

Comments:
In this picture you can see the now-demolished west end of the Girnel(anyone know when it was knocked down?). Did it contain the kiln from which the corner gets its name? There doesn't seem to be any opening or vent at the top (I'm presuming it would have had to have been bigger than that chimney), but perhaps it was roofed over. Presumably the door at top floor level was where picture #1673 was taken from.

I have a copy of the photo, and written on the reverse of it is
"Left to right, J Shearer Ironmonger, Mr Craigie Insurance agent. Standing right behind him is Jim Flett writer of Macrae and Robertson.Mrs McGinn's father, cannot place the passengers of the m/cycle combinations. Then the first solo m/cycle is Jim Flett Ironmonger, next is John Sclater with his father in his sidecar, then Dr. Petrie from Finstown on solo m/cycle, cannot remember the next, then Roderick Low of Peace & Low with Alex Morgan in his sidecar. Then third man down on sidewalk is Wm Mackay of the Post Office, father of the Postmaster of Stromness Post Office.Standing in the open window of the background building, with the bare head is Norman Slater son of Colonel Provost Slater.( He has been in Canada for years)
