Whur granny (Ga Ga) was a herring girl here in Stronsay. She used tae say about the happy times they had. It was hard work but then everyone worked hard in those days. She used to say about the fun they had and how the Coopers "turmented" them but all in good fun.
Once she recalled a daft lassie who wanted tae die. Oh says ane o the coopers "aal kill thee" so hee haggeled in her throat wae the back o his knife "naa naa she says thats sore" he says hid will be a damn sight sorer when I use the ither side o the knife!!.

For the record, the lady on the left is my great grandmother Janet Cormack Slater born June 7th 1885 on Sanday. She married Donald Hume Chalmers (master shoemaker) Storehouse Stronsay on 30th June 1910.There may be some confusion, as my great grandfather was a bachelor when he married not a widower.
