Big pictures

I'm impressed by the cameras of our contributors, but the unreduced 14 megapixel submissions are leading quickly to an increase in our storage costs. I can get round this to a certain extent by manually deleting them once they have transferred to our cheaper Amazon S3 hosting. However after deleting some pictures that I hadn't approved and transferred last time I did this housekeeping I'm a bit wary, so can I ask for huge pictures to be resampled or resized down to about 4 megapixels for the time being, if possible, please.

Orkneycommunities charity calendar

By popular demand (and I mean demand, Bruce Flett, and others, can be very insistent) the Orkneycommunities Image Library is planned to have a life beyond these hallowed pages. Read on to find out how you can help!

I've looked into the logistics, and think that if we produce a 2011 pictorial calendar by summertime we can raise about £3,000 for charities working locally. This year the charities are planned to be CLAN, Macmillan and CLIC Sargent, and if this one is a success I hope we can make this an annual thing and spread the proceeds over other charities too. All proceeds above production costs will go to charity.

Format is to be determined, but likely to A4 with a space for notes on the calendar. One big picture per month, and I'd like use some or all of the comments to tell a story for the pictures, and introduce others to what we have here.

So how can you help? Well, while I have seen all of the 7669 pictures (and counting) over the last 6 years, I can't remember them all. Some indication of appeal is given by the number of comments and the Favourites (which is based on the number of times a picture is added to a personal gallery), but I'm open to suggestions for pictures that would fit the bill- these are pictures that are maybe unique to here, tell a story, are topical for a certain month, or are just great. Bear in mind that all pictures might not be usable, as they might only be available in low resolution, or have copyright reserved by the contributor- this will be established once we have a shortlist.

Other ways to help: buy a lot of them when they go on sale- this is a guaranteed collectors item!; sponsor a page if you are a business- this will help underwrite the upfront production costs for us, and ultimately go to charity; suggest what we should ask for page sponsorship if you are a business- we are thinking in the £50-100 region- that reasonable? Email me (click my name, below) regarding sponsorship if you are a business (or quango!).

Well, that's the ball rolling now- long way to go though!

Cheers,
Steven

Kirkwall School, 1948

Just found the great picture of the school in 1948! I searched for Anne Bain who later became my best friend at Aberdeen High School for Girls and I think maybe I see her in it. Can anyone confirm this and let me know how to find her now?

I used to get a message telling me if anyone had added a comment on any of my photos. I don't get that anymore. Can you please tell me why ?

Hi Bill, when adding new pictures there is a checkbox at the bottom where you need to opt in to getting comments etc- have you been ticking that? Or is the problem with old pictures? Cheers Steven

A group of interesting pictures from Hoy

I found this today- a lot of pictures taken in what looks to me to be the big building on the side of the hill overlooking Lyness: www.scottyweb.co.uk/?p=1097. Seems to be a couple of skeletons in there!
Added by Steven Heddle on 20 October 2009 - add reply
Don't tell the council about it or they'll have that down too. (Oops maybe I just did). This building was probably MUCH more important than the black building. from here all the signal traffic for the fleet was handled.Maybe the council can redeem themselves yet. i'm sure there is not a building like it left in the country. I wonder what important messages were flashed to the fleet from the searchlight that was mounted on the frame in picture no 3.

Some years ago my wife did Bed and Breakfast here at the Ferm, and a very nice lady stayed for a few days with us and informed us she had been a Cypher Officer in the building on Wee Fea. I went oot tae the shed where I had some old Naval message books that had been "liberated" from the wireless station just above us which was part of the communication system from that building on Wee Fea,to the Fleet in the North Atlantic. Anyway I put one of these message books in front of this lady as she ate her breakfast, she almost choked on her bacon!!. She told us that she had been on the Solent and had personaly delivered instructions to the ships before they sailed for the D Day landings on just such message paper. I still have some to this day. Only as she went away we learned that her recent late husband was non other than the Queens Surgeon and the nice lady was indeed a Lady she was Lady Mummary!!.

Google ads

Is it possible to change it so the Google Ads do not apear in the middle of the comments?
Added by Alastair on 30 September 2009 - add reply
It is, but by their nature they need to be fairly intrusive to get the clicks. If we can get local advertising down the right hand side of the Image Library homepage that generates as much as the Adsense then I'm sure the management committee would consider reducing the Google ad density...

Zoom

You used to be able to click on an image to enlarge it and it would open up in a seperate window with a bigger picture. I cant see how to do that now. Am I missing something obvious or does that facility not exsist anymore? Without it, looking at group pictures like the Royal Observer Corps picture that was added today is a waste of time. [That's true, and it is something that we are working on. Keep the faith... - Steven]

Have a look now...
Added by Steven Heddle on 30 September 2009 - add reply
Thanks for that. We'll soon have the site the way we want it!! Will the zoom facility going to be available on all the pictures?
Added by Bruce Moar on 30 September 2009 - add reply
From this day forth, it'll be on a lot of pictures, but not all. Some come in at 6MB which is going to paste our bandwidth so they are deleted, unless they are of a huge group of people. Some come in as small pictures, or are maybe blurred when viewed large. If it is of something that would benefit from the big picture treatment, and no more than 2MB in size, it'll get the big picture treatment.
Added by Steven Heddle on 30 September 2009 - add reply

I have to agree with Jimmy not as impressed with this site now it has undergone an "upgrade" Really miss the 5 10 20 etc and not too keen on the advertising between all the comments - it makes you think there are no comments on the photo. As a result of these changes I for sure have not looked at the site as much since it was changed.

I think the 5 10 20 etc was much better it was easer to see if any new photos or comments had been put on any chance of this coming back. [It's a fair point- we'll get it back. The Back button has also been highlighted as an issue, so we'll try and get that back too. Broken links to comments and pictures are also showing up, and this need to be fixed too. Nothing is lost, but we have moved to a different database linking things together, and this is what is being debugged as a result of everybody's comments- Steven]

Trying to trace the family of Isabella Shearer

Hi, I'm the editor of the Alford images website and am researching a musician local to Alford who married a lass from Orkney. I'm trying to trace the relatives of Isabella Shearer, born 1872. She married Pipe Major Jimmy McHardy in Aberdeen in 1896. She died in 1943. Her daughter, Edith, was in touch by letter with her Orkney kin and I wonder if these letters have survived. Any help very gratefully received. There is a "group" dedicated to PM Jimmy McHardy on the Alford images website at www.alfordimages.com
Added by Jim Talbot on 06 December 2008 - add reply
Hi, Isabella Shearer was born in Shapinsay, at a place called Fuog, which no longer exists. Her parents were James Shearer and Mary Tulloch, and there will be a good number of the Shapinsay islanders distantly related.

Hi there, I will ask my auntie Susie if she has any. We used to live next door in Brims, unfortunaly I never really got to know any of those brave lads, as I was only 4 when the boat was lost. My mum was Anna Dempsey (nee Johnston). We lived in Inner Haven, next door to the Whitehouse. Do you keep in contact with your uncle Ian, Erics younger brother, he still lives here? If I can be of any help to you email me back.

Hello Patricia, I dont have a photo of Ericie, as he was known to us all, but I can tell you he was a great young man so full of fun and devilment, a very good musician and was so good to his widowed mother. I was with him and Chrissie at the Whitehouse the night before he died, we had a tune together and I never saw him again. So sad as he was not a regular crewman on the boat, but true to the man he was he offered to go and help. He was always kind and helpful to others throughout his all too short life.

The Man who bought a Navy.

The book title is above for you. It is so old it has no isbn number. Your local library might be able to order it in for you. I lost my copy I bought in Stromness but I did a google search and Amazon had then new and used copies for sale. New was 19.95 I live in Surrey and if you are "local" you can see mine first, if we are allowed to exchange contact numbers on this site. I believe the John Moore Bunty married was to do with one of the "pools" companies, (football pools). Cox owned a metal breakers yard at Queenborough Kent before venturing to Scapa Floa. All the material is administered by someone in Kent still. A visit to the museum is well worth the effort of getting there, I have been twice and stayed in Stromness on a farm. We went by train to Thurso and then walked 2 miles to Scrabster and caught the ferry (90 minutes) to Stromness. The Aberdeen ferry takes 8 hours, or one can fly from London changing at Wick

Fishing boat Girl Mina Photos wanted please.

I am currently making a model of the fishing vessel Girl Mina, which my Great Grandfather had built in 1932 in Dan Alexander's yard in Wick. I am looking for any photos of her in her fishing days, either in WK 172 or K 919 guises, that will assist me in making an accurate model. It doesn't have to be pics of her by herself. Just a simple harbour pic with her in it will do nicely. Thanks, Barry

The Google Ads are fine, and anything that helps keep this excellent site going is good. At least most of them so far are Orkney related, and if other sites are anything to go by, sometimes they can be (unintentionally) funny - for instance, a site I visit on cult tv programmes offered pest control ads on a page about Dangermouse! And if you're only looking for "tasteful" suggestions, I'll not bother sharing my idea! ;-D [As long as they don't involve making 'boats' using feathers and other floating objects as i n days of yore I'm sure they will be fine :-) -Steven]
