New OSCR guide on charity campaigning

The Office of Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has produced a new guide to help charities stay within the law when campaigning. The new guidance is aimed at helping charities to meet the requirements of electoral and charity law in advance of next year's UK general election, which takes place on 07 May 2015.

Charities with income under £200k to be exempt from water charges

The Scottish Government have announced that charity groups earning under £200k will be exempt from water and sewerage charges.† It means over 19,000 of Scotlandís 23,500 charities will qualify - as well as hundreds of amateur sports clubs.†

VAT Notice 701/1: charities, has been updated

The new notice about charity VAT cancels and replaces Notice 701/1 (January 1995).† The notice has been completely updated and applies to anyone involved in a charity, involved in a business who makes supplies to or has other dealings with charities, a fund-raiser for charities and a user of charity services.

OSCR looking to publish Scottish charity accounts on their website.

In their annual report the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has called on Scottish Ministers to consider a change in the law to allow publication of charity accounts on the Scottish Charity Register.

Charities SORP Consultation

The Financial Reporting Council has approved the new Charities Statements of Recommended Practice (SORP) for publication. It is due to be published this summer on the SORP website. †The Charities SORP provides recommendations for accounting and reporting, how accounting standards should be applied in the context of charities and how to account for charity specific transactions.†
