Plans to charge £140 a year for peripatetic music lessons in the Shetland Islands will go ahead , despite a campaign by local musicians and councillors to retain free lessons on the isles. A revised plan which exempted those from low-income backgrounds or those studying SQA level was agreed by the council on 30 June. Councillor Rick Nickerson had led the campaign and immediately resigned from his role as culture and recreation spokesperson, saying it was 'obvious to me that culture and recreation services will bear a disproportionate brunt of future cuts'.
