U3A Birdie Group - February 2019

by Tim Wright - 18:39 on 13 February 2019

Eight of us met at the Marwick Bay car park today for the U3A Bird Walk. The weather was dry with a moderate southerly and warmish.

We walked up to the Kitchener Memorial pausing to look at the large number of Waders and Ducks in the bay and on the flood water. There were no birds on the cliffs, not even Fulmars, but a Peregrine suddenly soared overhead and gave us excellent views of it's speed.

Down the path leading to the road there were approximately 50 Snow Buntings feeding and flying about. In another field of towards the Birsay road were 7 Pink Feet Geese. Back at the cars we set off for the Loons Hide where a pair of Gadwell were easily seen as was a hunting Hen Harrier over the Reeds. Fully satisfied with our morning's birding, seeing 31 species, we went to The Merkister to eat and warm up.

The next meeting is schedulded to be Wednesday 20 th March and is being led by Peter.
