U3A Birdie Group - December 2018

by Ronnie Johnson - 11:17 on 13 December 2018

8 courageous souls braved the barriers and blustery wind to meet at Echna Loch, from which point we were able to identify a good number of birds on the water of the Flow, for a short walk over Burray. We set off up the hill towards the village, but turned right along the road towards Littlequoy. After a brief stop overlooking Hunda and Littlequoy we re-traced our steps a short distance before turning off the road and following a track along the top of the hill, which, on a clear day commands views out as far as Copinsay, coming down past Hilltoft to rejoin the Littlequoy Road, back to the cars.

In all we saw 22 various species as follows: Mergnaza, Red Shanks, Pigeon, Gulls, Long Tail Duck, Geese, Tufted Ducks, Mute Swans, Starlings, Curlews, Widgin, Great Northern Diver, Slavonian Grebe, Blackbird, Snipe, Eider, Blackback Gull, Pheasant, Hoodie Crow, Rook, Lapwing and Turnstone.

The next outing, weather permitting, is on 16 January. Merry Christmas.

Anne and Ronnie
